WYMER Family History
Recorded today in the spellings of Wimlett, Wimlet, Wimmer, Wimmers, and Wymer, but originally only recorded in the latter spelling, this is a very rare English surname. However spelt it is a derivative form of the pre 7th century Anglo-Saxon personal name 'Wigmar' or the slightly later Breton 'Wimarch'. The former was a name brought from Germany in the 6th century, and the latter an 'introduction' by the Norman-French at the 1066 Invasion of England. The Anglo-Saxon name translates as 'war-famous' and the latter 'worthy-horse', both suitable names for 'invaders'.Select Audience
